Defending and Countering a slap or punch

Defending and Countering a Slap or Punch

This lesson demonstrates how to defend against a sudden slap or punch and respond safely using simple, realistic self-protection principles. Many real assaults begin with a quick emotional strike. The key is protecting the head, disrupting the attacker’s balance, and creating an opportunity to escape. The sequence shown below was filmed at Revolution Martial Arts Academy and forms part of the Aware360 real-world self-protection training system.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Awareness and Protective Position

Before the strike even begins the defender has their hands raised in a natural protective position.

2. The Punch or Slap Is Thrown

The attacker launches a fast strike toward the defender’s head.

3. Closing Distance

Instead of stepping backwards the defender moves forward.

4. Counter Strike – Nose or Throat

After protecting the head and closing distance, the defender delivers a counter strike.

5. Knee Strike Follow-Up

Once the attacker is disrupted the defender delivers a knee strike.
