The 5 D’s of Self-Defence
A real-world self-defence awareness framework. Built around prevention first, not fighting.
▶️ Start the 5 D’s FrameworkThe 5 D’s of Self-Defence is a simple decision-making framework designed for real-world situations where stress is high and time is limited.
Not every situation requires physical action. Most danger can be avoided long before it becomes a fight.
The 5 D’s Explained
1️⃣ Detect
Spot early warning signs, unusual behaviour, body language, positioning, and environmental risks.
Learn Detect →2️⃣ Deter
Use posture, confidence, awareness, and boundaries to make yourself a harder target.
Learn Deter →4️⃣ Defend
Use simple, high-percentage defensive actions only when contact is unavoidable.
Learn Defend →🧠 Debrief
Understand what happened, manage adrenaline, and look after your wellbeing.
Learn Debrief →🔪 Weapons Awareness & Distance Reality
If someone is threatening you with a knife, your priority is survival — not winning.
- If they want property, give it.
- Nothing you are carrying is worth your life.
- Sudden resistance greatly increases the risk of serious injury.
📏 Distance Is Your Greatest Protection
- Keep at least two arm-lengths if possible.
- Use obstacles — cars, tables, chairs — between you and the blade.
👀 Awareness of the Whole Body
- Watch the entire body, not just the weapon.
- Do not stare aggressively or challenge them.
- Movement toward you is a key danger signal.
⚠️ Important Disclaimer
This framework is for educational purposes only. Self-defence carries risk and techniques should only be practised under qualified supervision. Any use of force must be reasonable and proportionate to the threat as you honestly perceive it. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services.
